WHY DO I NEED A ROADWORTHY CERTIFICATE?
The law in Victoria requires the seller/buyer to obtain a Roadworthy Certificate to transfer the vehicle in another persons name. This ensures that the car meets a certain standard in safety, areas covered by the roadworthy certificate include aspects such as tyres, brakes, windscreens, seat belts and suspension.
WHAT IS A DODGY ROADWORTHY?
Some mechanics will sign the roadworthy certificate forms without checking the car to ensure it complies to the victorian standards for the roadworthy certificate. Not only is this illegal but mechanic workshops taking part in this can loose their business and risking the lifes of people buying the vehicle
WHAT DOES A ROADWORTHY COST?
A roadworthy check varies from $65-$80 depending on which mechanic you take your car to. Once the car is checked over there is usually things that will need to be done to pass the car, some places will check the car again for free once the things are repaired while others charge $10-$15. The car must be taken back to the same mechanic by 31 days or else the mechanic must do another roadworthy check.
HOW LONG DOES A ROADWORTHY CERTIFICATE LAST?
You have 14 days from the roadworthy to transfer the car into the new owners name.
